Police arrest rape suspects

ALEXANDRA – Two alleged rapists apparently told their victim they would teach her a lesson for walking the streets at night.

Two men accused of rape and robbery in Alex were remanded in custody to 31 May by the Alexandra Magistrates’ Court.

The two allegedly raped two women and robbed one of them of a cell phone on the night of 14 March next to Nobuhle hostel. They stopped the first victim at about 10pm on 6th Avenue while she was walking with her boyfriend to buy cigarettes at a spaza shop. One of them allegedly produced a gun forcing the boyfriend to retreat and hide. They then allegedly took the victim’s cell phone and told her they would teach her a lesson for walking the streets at night.

She was taken to a secluded spot near the hostel, forced to undress and one of the men raped her without a condom. In the process, they pointed a gun at another woman walking nearby to come to them. She complied and they forced her to undress and she was raped by the other man while the first victim was raped again by the accomplice.

Afterward, the second victim managed to escape. The accused then walked with the victim towards her home saying that they wanted to know where she lived as one of them (her rapist) was now in a relationship with her.

Police pounced on them and arrested one of them after her boyfriend reported the incident. He was found in the possession of a toy gun. The accomplice who ran away was arrested on 31 March after his acquaintances informed about the incident, tipped off the police to his involvement.
