Police contain school gang attack

ALEXANDRA – Cops stop armed school boys on warpath.

A school gang war was averted recently at Ikage Primary School by Alexandra Police Station officers.

Station spokesperson Captain Stephen Malatji said that the principal called them when a gang from an unnamed school or schools, armed with an assortment of weapons, went to Ikage allegedly on a revenge mission and asked for a boy. Malatji added that the gang waited at the school gate and attacked any boy who wanted to leave, forcing the security to retain the learners inside until the police arrived and defused the confrontation.

Malatji said the police action wasn’t a guarantee against similar incidents flaring up elsewhere. He urged parents to develop relationships with their children. “Spending quality time with them and showing parental interest in their schoolwork and safety will facilitate openness and reliance, enabling the children to confide in them.”

Malatji said that this responsibility should not be left to teachers and the police only.

Malatji also urged the parents to attend school meetings and to encourage others, as part of a collective effort that includes the children, to resolve the challenges before they involve the police.
