Update, 15 May, 1.50pm

The chairperson of  the Alex enquiry, Buang Jones said they would extend an invitation to the Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF).

This was after Gauteng MEC for Human Settlements, Uhuru Moiloa suggested that some political parties that advocated illegal land invasions, should be invited to make their oral submissions before the commission of enquiry.

The commission is investigating if the government infringed on the human rights of Alexandra residents that led to the Alex shutdown protests.

Initial Report, 15 May, 12pm

Human Rights Commission provincial manager Buang Jones in conjunction with the office of the Public Protector have established an enquiry following two weeks of service delivery protests in Alexandra.

The commission will establish whether Alex residents’ human rights were infringed by the three spheres of government, including investigating socio-economic conditions in the area, its impact on fundamental human rights and whether it amounts to maladministration, abuse of power and corruption.

Jones said he would send a summons to the director general in the office of the premier, Phindile Baleni to appear before the commission which is sitting in Braamfontein.

This was after Baleni failed to appear before the commission on 18 April and on 14 May this year.
