Winter exercise to shed the flab

ALEXANDRA – Female gym seeks help to expand.

Women cause of their own downfall too often by abandoning advice they are given on exercise and eating habits.

“It’s easy for them and young people, in general, to turn to fast foods than cooking and eating healthy and balanced diets with fruits and occasional salads. “Their usual refrain is that meals that are good for their health are boring,” said Ntombi Dlamini, aerobics trainer at Ikasi Gym’s 12 Avenue branch.

Dlamini has fronted for the gym since 2016 when part-time trainers wouldn’t balance work commitments elsewhere with helping the township women maintain positive self-esteem and pride through well-toned and healthy bodies.

She runs weekly evening cardio step, body toning and body spinning bike exercises for 20 women between 18 and 45 years. She guides them through dumbbells, trade mill and vibrator machines. “Also, we help a few men with weight loss exercises and sportswomen with squat exercises to build their muscles.”

All this done in limited space she said requires expansion to help enroll more women and expand the services to also include weekend and holidays.

Dlamini said with schools sports waning, there was a growing demand for gym services although most of the enthusiasts lacked will power to sustain long-term commitment. “Some are quickly discouraged when they see no weight loss after a few sessions even when they act contrary to advise by continuing to consume junk food which we can’t control.”

She said others gave up when they felt pain resulting from their bodies adjusting to the exercises. The service is also extended to the elderly to help them fend off age-associated ailments and improve their mental, psychological and physical wellness. “Unfortunately, the slim ones have a misconception that they are already fit and avoid exercising to their own detriment.”

She commended clinics’ residents to exercise and advised particular neighbours of the facility to seek the services which contrary to belief, are affordable at R100 per month. With the onset of winter, she encouraged the women to exercise more to avoid the seasonal weight gain which is difficult to shed later after a sedentary lifestyle while hibernating from the cold.
