Johannesburg Mayor Mashaba attend sensitivity programme at HRC

BRAAMFONTEIN – This is connection with a Tweet he made last November on his ebola remarks.

Buang Jones, Gauteng provincial manager at the office of the Human Rights Commission announced that City of Johannesburg Mayor Herman Mashaba will undergo a diversity programme next month.

According to Jones, speaking at their Braamfontein offices in Johannesburg, said Mashaba is expected to attend a sensitivity and diversity programme in May.

This after his ‘citizen’s arrest’ of an undocumented foreign national transporting cow heads in a trolley in the Johannesburg CBD last November.

At that time, Mashaba faced a backlash for tweeting about his citizen’s arrest from various sectors of the society including his co-governing party, the Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF).

On 16 April, Jones, who was speaking on the sidelines of a meeting held with Gauteng MEC Faith Mazibuko, who also face the accusation of human rights infringement, said Mashaba is expected to attend this programme.

“The programme will run for a day on sensitivity and diversity to help the executives in government to understand and uphold the rights of humanity as enshrined in our Constitution,” he said.

When contacted, the spokesperson for Mashaba, Luyanda Mfeka, said he could not respond at the time claiming he doesn’t have full details on this matter.

“I’m currently on leave and will only be able to respond when I get back to the office,” he said.

Mashaba then tweeted: “We are [not] going to sit back and allow people like you to bring us ebolas in the name of small business. The health of our people first…”

He has since apologised for his ‘insensitive’ comments.

It is still not yet clear when the programme will take place but Jones confirmed that it will definitely be in the month of May.
