Joburg City insources another 1 000 security guards

JOHANNESBURG – Executive Mayor of Johannesburg Herman Mashaba welcomed the newly-insourced security guards.

Johannesburg Mayor Herman Mashaba has announced the insourcing of another 1 000 security guards on 1 May as full-time City’s employees.

The mayor was joined by the MMC for Public Safety, Michael Sun, and the MMC for Group Corporate and Shared Services (GCSS), Ntombi Khumalo they welcomed the security guards.

Mashaba announced that the security guards will be full-time City employees.

“Today I am addressing you as full-time employees of the City of Johannesburg from the first of July,” said Mashaba.

The addition of these security guards, who are currently contracted by the City’s municipal entities, brings the total number of security guards insourced to around 3 700.

The mayor added that City will provide better benefits to these security guards.

“This multi-party government is committed to bringing Diphetogo to our residents, and especially to those that commit to ensuring the safety of others. Through insourcing these guards, the City is able to provide better benefits not only these employees but also to their families and dependents.”

“Ultimately, dignity is being restored to these security guards, who are essential to the successful day-to-day running of the City.”

Mashaba urged the guards not to get involved in illegal activities.

“As the employees of the City of Johannesburg, please do not be tempted to get into things that will compromise you because there are evil forces out there that are not happy with what is happening right now. By insourcing you, I have closed the purse of tenderpreneurs.”

He added that all the insourced guards would be vetted before they can be hired.

“We are going to do the vetting processes so that by the time you start, we don’t have any issues. I really hope that all of you are clean human beings because what we learned with the first phase is that some of the people were criminals, others used fraudulent ID books. They were not South Africans.”
