State-of-the-art Marlboro Licensing Centre re-opened
MARLBORO – The centre, which boasts modern technology to eliminate corruption, was opened after nearly a year of renovations.
The Marlboro Licensing Centre was officially opened by the City of Johannesburg after being closed for nearly a year due to renovations.
The licensing centre is now lauded as a flagship centre which boasts modern technology to ensure that all forms of corruption are rooted out. The Sandton Chronicle first reported that the centre would be closed for renovations in Marlboro Licensing Centre to be closed until August (published online 13 June 2018).
Numerous delays led to the opening of the centre being postponed, however, City officials have praised the new centre.
At the official opening, hosted on 18 April, Liziwe Ntshinga-Makoro, the director of Region E, said that the upgraded centre is just one of the examples of the work that the city has been doing to provide excellent services. “It has taken us a bit of time to get to where we are but I am sure that as people are walking through the centre they will see the beautiful work that has been done by the City of Johannesburg.”
To celebrate the official opening, 25 learners from KwaBhekilanga Secondary School in Alexandra were fully sponsored to do their learners tests at the new centre. Learners tests at the centre are now all computer-based which ensures that tests are marked quickly and efficiently while also rooting out any opportunities for cheating or corruption.
During a tour of the new centre, the head of licensing, Melusi Ngcobo explained that now, rather than waiting in a line to be helped, visitors can obtain a number from the relevant department and wait wherever they please until their number has been called. Ngcobo said that this will prevent people from being able to pay to go to the front of the line as well as make the process faster.
The MMC for community safety, Michael Sun, said, “When we first started with this project we said, ‘Do I, an MMC want to come spend two or three hours here on any given day?’. Do our residents want to come and sit here for hours? Is that the level of service we want to give to our customers?
“Absolutely not. This is where we started with the planning and design of a state-of-the-art licensing centre, not just on the exterior but also in terms of service delivery.”
