A man who claimed to have been duped into committing fraud was sentenced to nine years’ imprisonment by the Alexandra Magistrates’ Court.
Cowan Nkwazi claimed that he opened a bank account which others, who he couldn’t identify, used to access R500 000 which had been defrauded. The accomplices seemingly hacked an email account and banking details of a victim who was about to purchase a motor vehicle from a dealership in Northgate.
They then intercepted the payment before it reached the dealership and transferred the money into the accused’s account. The money was immediately withdrawn. The accused was traced by investigators and arrested. It wasn’t specified if and what the accused was paid for his involvement.
