Jeppe police hunt for Uber driver’s robbers

JEPPESTOWN – The robbers pretended to be customers requesting for Uber transport.

Jeppe police are searching for two suspects in connection with a robbery incident that happened in Jeppestown on 15 March.

According to the spokesperson for the Jeppe Police Station, Captain Richard Munyayi, an Uber driver was robbed of his belonging by the suspects posing as customers on Vickers Road.

Munyayi said the 33-year-old Uber driver claimed he was requested via an app to come and pick up clients in Jeppestown and then drop them off at George Goch Hostel that night. On his arrival, two men entered the car and one sat in the front seat while the other one took the back seat, he said.

“When the driver was about to drive away, the suspect who was sitting in the front seat pulled up a hand gear forcing the car to stop.

“The one in the back seat pulled out a firearm and pointed at the driver while the suspect in the front seat searched him and took his 9 mm Beretta 951 pistol, money and a wallet that had a driver’s and firearm licence. One told the other suspect to shoot him but the victim managed to drive off and he hit a wall not far from the crime scene and the suspects ran away on foot.”

Munyayi added that the Uber company managed to trace one of the suspects through a cell phone that was used to request an Uber service.

He said the man in the picture (Sinenhlanhla Lushaba) is the one whose cell phone was apparently used and thus the police are searching for him.

“No arrest has been made yet but the police have launched a manhunt to track down the two suspects.

“We request anyone who can assist with information of their whereabouts to contact the police.”

People can contact the investigation officer, Detective Sergeant Jimmy Khosa on 071 537 5069 or 082 954 9579.
