A dicey assault

ALEXANDRA – Assault GBH case ends in suspended sentence for two.

Two men received a suspended sentence in the Alexandra Magistrates’ Court for assault with intent to cause grievous bodily harm.

Sibane Khurumala and Jabulani Radebe were sentenced to 24 months in jail which was wholly suspended for five years. This, after they had already spent four months behind bars.

They had assaulted another man on 17 November last year at a Sunninghill informal settlement resulting in him being hospitalised. In mitigation, they claimed to have beaten him up to stop him from wasting money. But it emerged in court that they had assaulted him for drinking their beer without their permission. This was after the victim had apparently lost money in a game of dice and then drank the alcohol.

The two accused chased him and he ran into a nearby restaurant. A security guard at the eatery chased them from the premises and they took him to their place where they assaulted him until he lost consciousness.

The victim identified the two after he was discharged from the hospital and they were arrested.
