Four hawks members on corruption, extortion other charges

ALEXANDRA – Hawks members in pre-bail application custody at Midrand Police Station

Four members of the Hawks were remanded in police custody by the Alexandra Magistrates’ Court for alleged corruption, extortion, intimidation, and defeating the ends of justice.

The three who were transferred from the Randburg Magistrates’ Court, were joined in the dock by a fourth suspect and were remanded at Midrand Police Station pending their bail application on 11 April.

In a Caxton Central’s article, a police statement said the three, Captain Thembani Luyanda Mnonopi (55), Captain Mydarling Hlanganani Ndaba (39), and Warrant Officer Zanele Constance Shabane (49) were arrested by the Hawks’ Serious Corruption Investigation and Crime Intelligence on 5 April.

This after investigations revealed that they allegedly intimidated and extorted more than R100 000 in foreign and local currency from a Midrand businessman in January. They reportedly threatened to have his business shut down for operating without valid documents and for being in the country illegally.
