City of Johannesburg invests in youth

ALEXANDRA – Seminar exposes youth to empowerment opportunities

Joburg’s township youth were encouraged to explore the city council’s website for job opportunities that would take them off the streets.

This follows a Youth Leadership and Empowerment seminar in Eldorado Park which was attended by youngsters including high school learners.

“The event was to motivate them to follow their passion and aim to fulfil their full potential,” read a statement from the city council.

The municipal chairperson of Gender, Youth, and People living with Disabilities, councillor Nazley Sharif said the seminar was to encourage the youth to be career driven and believe in themselves.

“The youth need to identify their passion and stick to it. Young people needed to value themselves and be the change they want to see,” Sharif said. She encouraged them to visit the city council website to apply for employment.

Also speaking at the seminar, Pastor Palesa Phara of Ithateng Africa, a local advocacy group said, “It’s important for young people to recognise their power and appreciate the gift of life. You need to keep shinning in order to be the best in what you do, no matter the situation.”

A community member, Ipeleng Mokomo offered to teach unemployed attendees the skills needed to fix leaking water pipes, cut grass and replace broken windows.

A Grade 11 learner at Willow Crescent High School, Ntoakie Ramokgadi was upbeat about the opportunity.

“I have learned a lot from this seminar and wish for more of the same programmes from the City so that my peers and I can be inspired to make good choices in life,” said Ramokgadi.
