Update: #AlexTotalShutDown to resume on 8 April after Mashaba fails to attend the meeting

ALEXANDRA – Total shutdown on 8 April after the mayor failed to honour their meeting invitation.

Update, 5 April, 12.15am

A community meeting discussing the way forward after service delivery protests in Alexandra is underway in Sankopano Community Hall.

One of the organisers Sandile Mavundla has confirmed that residents have agreed to embark on a total shutdown on 8 April after Executive Mayor Herman Mashaba failed to attend the meeting after being invited.

The angry residents of Alexandra are threatening to invade the City’s Region E offices in Sandton after the meeting. Some have brought tyres as a sign of readiness to shut down the streets. The issue of service delivery and housing were the most pressing issues raised by the residents.

Initial report, 5 April, 11am

Residents of Alexandra are still hoping that the City of Johannesburg’s number one citizen Herman Mashaba will come to provide them with answers on issues of service delivery.

Schools were the most affected as they remain closed in the township since 3 April.

Organisers of the protest said it’s all on the shoulders of Mashaba whom they want to come and address them. Organisers had called for a community meeting for 8 April but it has since been moved to today (5 April) with an invitation for the mayor to attend.
