ALEXANDRA – A senior pastor at Seventh Adventist Church has urged youngsters to lend a helping hand in the community.

Local youngsters who attended a youth summit organised by the local church said they were extremely inspired and their hopes for the better future resuscitated.

According to Nobuhle Zondo, youth coordinator at Seventh Day Adventist in Alexandra, said the week-long summit, held at KwaBhekilanga Secondary School from 9 to 16 March, was aimed at liberating local young people and help them find purpose of their lives.

She said among topics that were discussed in the summit was the issue of teenage pregnancy in schools, violent incident attributed to substance abuse, high rate of dropouts in schools, mental wellness and how to deal with tempting circumstances.

Ben Mwamba, a senior pastor at the church, urged youngsters to offer their services to the local non-governmental organisations (NGO) for free while they are at school so they acquire required professional skills.

“When you go out of this summit you must go and share what you learned here with others. You must be instrumental in changing people’s lives out there by offering your services and skills for free in the community,” said Mwamba.

Nomthandazo Mkhize and Chantelle Mavimbela said they learned a lot from speakers that were facilitating the summit and lauded organisers for a job well done.

“Learning from people who have been through what we currently go through as young people helps a lot. One gets to understand that if you find yourself cornered by a certain situation there is always a way out of it. I also learned that giving back to the community without expecting payment is vitally important,” Mkhize said.
