African Democratic Change party to campaign on cancer

ALEXANDRA – Sexually active females warned to protect selves on Valentine's Day

Women were advised not to let sexually transmitted diseases(STI) or unplanned pregnancies be an enduring memory of 2019 Valentine’s Day.

The warning from the African Democratic Change party reminded in particular young lovers that ‘the day and month are more than about just love but also mark sexual and reproductive health’.

In a statement, party secretary-general Nathaniel Bricknell said, “As much as 14 February is one to appreciate your partner, there are a few things that we should not allow ourselves to forget in the heat of the moment.

“Many young women, in particular, are exposed to various infections and viruses that are avoidable simply by following basic protective measures.”

He advised those in a relationship, “Use protection every time you have sex. Many STIs, including HIV, have no cure, and once you have them, they are with you for life.

“Remember, birth control can only protect against pregnancy, so you must use condoms every time you have sex to avoid the risk of STIs.”

The warning was also directed to poor citizens with no financial means to test or get vaccines for some STIs, particularly the human papillomavirus (HPV) which is the leading cause of genital warts and cancer. “It’s a vaccine which is not offered at state facilities, costs about R900 plus per injection and should be repeated thrice.

“One out of every 100 sexually active adults has the virus and 80 per cent of women who have it will develop cervical cancer.”

Bricknell urged for this cancer to also be regarded as an epidemic requiring state intervention through awareness campaigns and testing at all clinics nationwide. “This matter is part of our election manifesto and will be one of our key points once we enter Parliament.”
