Taxify drivers robbed again in Alex

ALEXANDRA – Armed robbers target Taxify drivers again.

The Alexandra Police Station suspects that another two Taxify taxi robberies on 13 February were carried out by a gang of wanted men.

The spokesperson Captain Stephen Malatji said the robberies occurred five hours apart, at 8pm and 12pm. The previous two robberies on 29 January and featured in Taxify, Uber taxi drivers robbed hours apart in Alex, Week ending 9 Feb, also occurred five hours apart but in the daytime and also two to four suspects were involved.

In the latest incidents, Taxify drivers were requested to pick up customers on 8th Avenue, the same street as one of the previous robberies. On the taxis’ arrival, the suspects got into the vehicles and at gunpoint, robbed the drivers of cash, cell phones and other unspecified items. Malatji suspects that the robbers target Taxify drivers because they supposedly carried petty cash or fees from previous passengers, unlike Uber riders who are paid through electronic transfer.

He urged the drivers to be more circumspect when called by passengers both in the daytime and at night.
