Joburg mayor, Herman Mashaba releases crime stats for January

JOBURG – Executive mayor of Johannesburg, Herman Mashaba releases crime statics for January.

Johannesburg mayor, Herman Mashaba has on 19 February released the results of the Johannesburg Metropolitan Police Department’s (JMPD) crime-fighting efforts for January.

Mashaba said Metro police made 557 arrests in January and a major concern was the number of cases for driving under the influence of alcohol. Region E, which consists of  Alex and Sandton, has the highest drink and driving arrests with 117 people arrested while three were arrested for reckless and negligent driving. One person was arrested for being in possession of an illegal firearm. There were a high number of arrests for the possession of a hijacked or stolen vehicle, possession of stolen goods and reckless and negligent driving.

Check the top arrest per region for January 2019.

“Indeed, drivers on our freeways were issued with 2 062 citations. Even though this is down from 2 717 citations in December, with over

178 000 AARTO notices issued for speeding, JMPD is focusing efforts toward road safety through its monthly activities,” said Mashaba in a statement.

“These include operation nightlife, crime prevention roadblocks, and roadside checks. Combined, over 20 000 vehicles were checked in January, leading to 84 arrests, 209 discontinued vehicles, and over 13 000 citations issued.”

According to the City, 90 illegal electricity connections and 129 illegal water connections were removed.

“Illegal connections seriously hamper the City’s ability to deliver quality services. The lost revenue recovered, which now exceeds over R1.3 billion, would have greatly assisted in upgrading infrastructure and proving services communities that have never had access before.”

According to the City of Joburg, JMPD has been compiling monthly statistics since September last year and it has become a tool of reflection for officers as well as a way of informing residents.  The City said JMPD was working hard to increase the levels of safety within communities.
