UPDATE– Cosatu marches against job losses

NEWTOWN – The trade union federation takes a stand against retrenchments.

The Congress of South African Trade Unions  (Cosatu) has on embarked on a strike to protest against job loses on 13 February. The nationwide strike took place in multiple cities across the country.

This comes after president Cyril Ramaphosa announced in his State of the Nation Address (Sona) that the power utility, Eskom, will be split into three divisions.

SA Communist Party’s (SACP) Solly Mapaila said they support Ramaphosa’s decision but added that workers must not lose their jobs because of this.

 

Mapaila said they are against the exploitation of workers and privatisation of state-owned entities.

Trade union federation Congress of South African Trade Unions (Cosatu) will be taking to the streets today, 13 February to strike against job losses. 

The nationwide strike will take place in multiple cities across the country, as it urges members and ordinary citizens to join the strike.

With government’s plans to cut jobs in state-owned enterprises (SOE’s), the state of the economy and business plans cutting jobs, the trade union is taking a stand against the retrenchments.
