Taxify, Uber taxi drivers robbed hours apart in Alex

ALEXANDRA – Taxify, Uber drivers fall prey to armed 'passengers'.


Alexandra Police Station officers are trying to trace suspects who robbed two taxi drivers in separate incidents five hours apart on 26 January.

Police spokesperson Captain Stephen Malatji could not confirm if it was the same group of suspects involved in both incidents.

He said the first incident occurred at about 8.30am on 8th Avenue. The victim, a Taxify driver was called to pick up two passengers. When they got into the taxi, the suspects, one of who was known by the driver, pointed a gun at him. They then took R400 in cash from him, a USB worth R250 and a cell phone valued at R1 000 and fled without firing a shot.

In the second incident which occurred at about 1.30pm, an Uber taxi driver was called to pick up three passengers on 9th Avenue. On arrival, three suspects got into the vehicle and at gunpoint, they took R3 000 in cash from him and a cell phone worth R370. No shots were fired and they also fled the scene.
