Police arrest 12 people for illegal Tsutsumani evictions

ALEXANDRA – Police warn they more people will be arrested following violent evictions in Tsutsumani.

 


Twelve people believed to be leaders of a group responsible for the illegal evictions of foreign nationals from RDP houses in Tsutsumani Ext 7 and Ext 10 have been arrested.

The 12 were arrested for public violence on Monday 21 January after the hard work of detectives and the special task team specifically assigned for this particular case. The evictions that started last year had called the attention of premier David Makhura said, during his announced visit at the 8th Avenue Clinic, that he will be visiting the area later this month.

Alexandra Police Station spokesperson Stephen Malatjie said more people were to be arrested for causing lawlessness in the area.

“We believe that more people will be apprehended soon and eventually this wave of lawlessness will be curbed on its bud once and for all,” Malatjie said.

He also urged community members to work together with the police and never take the law into their hands. “We urge all peace-loving people of Alexandra to help and work together with the police. We urge our community to never take the law into their hands.”

The 12 suspects were all detained in Alexandra Police Station cells.
