Johannesburg Mayor Herman Mashaba last year launched Operation Buya Mthetho (Bring back the law) in an attempt to curb the scourge of lawlessness in the city.
The campaign aims to enforce laws, raising revenue collection and preventing crime. However, there are some corrupt officials who continue to demand bribes from community members despite the operation being in full force.
A tourist posted a picture of South African Police Service (SAPS) official allegedly soliciting a bribe from him.
“Landed in Johannesburg. Police stopped our car on way to [a] hotel. Friendly but wanted a gift before he let us go. Grilled us. Honestly a little scared,” tweeted Shaun Rein.

The City of Johannesburg Department of Public Safety responded to Rein’s tweet and said SAPS and Gauteng Community Safety is to do a follow-up on the alleged incident.
