Man held for perjury

BRAMLEY – The man apparently lost work cell phone and decided to open a false case of carjacking.

A man was held by the Bramley police for allegedly lying to the police about him being hijacked in his car in Marlboro and dumped in Soweto on 2 January.

According to the police, a man came to the station to report that he had been hijacked and the criminals drove around with him and subsequently dumped him in Meadowlands, Soweto.

The police took down his statement and began with the preliminary investigation, said spokesperson, Captain Molefe Mogodi.

The investigation revealed that the man had ‘lied’ under oath as the ‘crime’ never even happened.

“The suspect told the police that he was driving in Marlboro area when four men, two of them armed with firearms, threatened him, forced him into their car while one of them drove his car,” Mogodi explained.

“He further told the police that his cell phone was also taken during the hijacking.

“During the interrogation, the detectives came to the conclusion that they could not believe him as his statement contained information that could not be true.”

The vehicle was reported to have been hijacked on 29 December and he was dumped in Soweto on 30 December and Mogodi said he only came to the station to report on 2 January.

“The police further went to Soweto to investigate and the footage at one of the filling stations the man claimed that he went to at some point to seek help, showed that the man had been there driving the same car, long after the ‘hijacking’ had occurred.

“He finally confessed that it was because he had lost his work cell phone, which was why he was reporting the false hijacking.”

He is expected to appear in court and the police appealed to the community not to report false cases as this was a waste of time and state resources.
