Dedicated tutors celebrated

JOHANNESBURG – The Help2read initiative hosted a special graduation for their community literacy tutors.

The Help2read initiative celebrated their community literacy tutor programme participants through a special graduation ceremony at Constitution Hill on 13 December.

The initiative’s community literacy tutor programme is a year-long development programme for literate but unemployed youth. Tutors receive both theoretical training and practical work experience in the programme. The tutors are stationed at schools in Alexandra and Diepsloot and assist learners who have trouble with reading twice a week with one-on-one assistance.

The schools they assisted were Ekhukhanyisweni Primary School, Carter Primary School and Iphuleng Primary school in Alexandra, and Diepsloot Primary School no 4 in Diepsloot.

MC Gina Aphane said that the ceremony was a celebration for the completion of the programme, but also the amazing hard work done by the tutors.

The graduation ceremony was held at the Human Rights Room at Constitution Hill with various partners of the initiative present. The graduates of the programme were also given one-on-one time with personalities such as managing director of Help2read Lynn Campbell, children’s author Refiloe Moahloli and writer Ntsako Mkhabela.

Managing director of Help2read Lynn Campbell said the tutors were instrumental in unlocking the doors to literacy for a lot of children.

She added that they’ve been able to open the world of reading to children, which is also a world without barriers.
