Spread some ‘ubuntu’ this festive

ALEXANDRA – Chauke worried about ignorance of the meaning of freedom.

If truth is to be told, violence and crime in Alex are driven by lack of ubuntu principles.

This was said by a social activist, ex-teacher and founder of NPO Joy For One, Leratong (Love) Centre, Peggy Chauke in reference to unrelenting crime besieging the township “The truth is that many will be maimed and some killed this festive season as during the rest of the year because we lack discipline.

“We do not see mirror images of ourselves in others but regard them like animals.”

She attributed this to residents and other citizens nationwide misinterpreting the hard-won independence in 1994 to mean carte blanche freedom to do as they please. “There is a deep ignorance about the meaning of this liberation leading to unrestrained infringement on the rights of others.”

This, Chauke said, is a lethal combination when linked with a hardened culture of violence still with us overflowing from the apartheid era. She said the crimes of murder, rape, hijacking and robbery happening daily are seen and emulated by children when parents do not instil discipline in them. “We need to understand the essence and responsibilities that come with the freedom which includes self-discipline, respect, love for and reliance on each other.”

Chauke said residents are quick to shove the blame on government including on matters deriving from their ill-conduct. ” We blame the government but do not report crimes and drug peddling, teachers when they don’t supervise children’s school work, attend school meetings and discipline our children.

“As charity begins at home so is the discipline which is more, the parents’ responsibility than the teacher’s.”

She urged families to be the government at their homes and orient children to be forthright and responsible citizens from infancy.

Chauke also blamed those in high office for disregarding their erstwhile compatriots once they are elevated to positions of power, influence and with higher earnings. “Retain ubuntu principles, honour and respect by them, continue to belonging and assist them when you can.

“Money must not change you but instead, you should change the negative circumstances you left behind like poverty, unemployment and disempowerment.”
