Children equipped for ‘big’ school

ALEXANDRA – New takkies uplift spirits at East Bank Secondary School.

Children at a crèche and secondary school were the latest beneficiaries of donations from non-profit organisation (NPO) Blessed Is The Hand That Gives.

The organisation, which operates from the Ethiopian Catholic Church on 10th Avenue, engages in a range of charity work by distributing material items as well as physical and spiritual services including to former offenders through a ministry programme.

The donations are given to its partner entities and others in crisis. The NPO’s Nkosinathi Ntabeni said they donated stationery to 35 children at Thabisong Day Care Centre on 8th Avenue in keeping with the centre’s tradition of introducing the children to ‘big’ school for next year through essential learning material.

“It’s a historical tradition by one of Alex’s oldest early childhood learning centres which produced many current luminaries particularly in the arts,” Ntabeni said, identifying prolific gumboot dancers and actors as its main protégés.

The organisation will also paint the school, which struggled this year to embark on all its planned activities due to resource limitation. The coat of paint, he said, will spruce the place up and help it recover its past glory as a learning institution of foundational learning.

The other beneficiaries were 350 learners from East Bank Secondary School who received new takkies sponsored by Redemption Church of Greenstone. According to Ntabeni, “It’s the church’s commitment to investing in the development of the nation’s future human resources and leaders.”

He said David Heritage of the church told the beneficiaries that it was also the church’s role to share God’s love through giving to the needy. “They ought to know that God also loves them.

“By giving to the youth, you sow a seed for the future and it’s also an investment,” Heritage was quoted to have said.
