Suspected kidnappers nabbed

ALEXANDRA – Musina to Joburg trip ends in kidnapping and robbery.

Two men charged with kidnapping and robbery were remanded in custody pending a further hearing at the Alexandra Magistrates’ Court.

Their suspected accomplice wasn’t home when the two were arrested in East Bank on 2 November.

Two of the men were driving in a Honda motor vehicle when they gave three hitchhikers a lift from Musina coming to Johannesburg at midday on 31 October.

Upon arrival in Joburg, they took the off-ramp from the N1, into Alexandra claiming they wanted to collect something. They parked the vehicle at a house and one of them went inside and returned with another person who carried a black bag.

Once in the vehicle, one of the men pointed a gun at the victims. One of them searched the victims and took some of their personal items. The victims were each asked to deposit R2 000 into a specified account. One victim was even given airtime to activate his phone and call relatives.

One of the victims’ relatives paid the R2 000, another’s relatives paid R1 000 and no action was specified for the third victim. They later dropped the victims at an isolated area. However, the victims had noted the vehicle’s licence plate number and gave the information to the police, leading to their arrest.
