Mystery explosion probed

JEPPESTOWN – The cause of the explosion remains unknown.

 

The City of Johannesburg Emergency Management Services is investigating a mysterious explosion at a factory in Jeppestown.

Two men believed to be in their early 30s sustained moderate to serious burns after the explosion at the factory in Berg Street on 13 October.

It is still not yet clear what caused the explosion and authorities have confirmed that they are investigating the matter.

When contacted, the spokesperson for the Jeppe police, Captain Richard Mulaudzi, said they had no information about the incident and referred all queries to emergency services.

Robert Mulaudzi, the spokesperson for the Johannesburg Emergency Management Services confirmed that people had been injured during the explosion.

“Yes, the injured were transported to Milpark Hospital. They suffered minor injuries and smoke inhalation. The cause of the fire is unknown,” said Mulaudzi.

In a statement, ER24 said paramedics arrived on the scene shortly before 10am to find the fire department already in attendance.

Upon further assessment, two workers on the first floor were found to have suffered moderate to serious burns.

“The injured were treated on the scene by our medics before being transported to a burns unit facility for further medical care,” said ER24 spokesperson Ross Campbell.
