The Mayor of the City of Johannesburg, Herman Mashaba has announced that driving under the influence continues to be the biggest law-infringement in the Sandton area.
Mashaba, the MMC for Safety, Michael Sun, and Metro police chief, David Tembe, released the crime statistics report for the city during their monthly briefing.
Throughout the regions, driving under the influence continues to be the biggest problem, with Region E which covers the Sandton and Alexandra areas, accumulating the most arrests (430) for driving under the influence.
Mashaba said, “With respect to operations conducted by the Johannesburg Metropolitan Police Department’s [JMPD] K9 Narcotics Tactical Unit, 37 stolen vehicles were recovered during the month of September, bringing the total number of recovered vehicles to 138 since the month of July. In addition, 10 firearms were also recovered since the month of July.”
He added that through Operation Buya Mthetho, the Metro police conducted 25 visible policing operations in bad buildings between the months of July to September, with 12 arrests made. In addition to this, during the same period, a total of 670 vehicles were impounded through operations for detecting unroadworthy taxis and vehicles. The City has also issued 200 201 Administrative Adjudication of Road Traffic Offence Infringement notices for the month of September.
“As a City, we will continue to do all that is within our power to ensure that we create safe and connected communities throughout Johannesburg. Alongside this, we will continue work with our law enforcement authorities to see to it that where arrests are made by JMPD, these cases are not only investigated but also properly prosecuted by law enforcement authorities.”
Region E also recorded 38 arrests for possession or dealing in drugs, 12 arrests for reckless and or negligent driving and three arrests for the possession of an unlicensed or illegal firearm. There were also two arrests for fraud, two arrests for assault with intent to cause grievous bodily harm, two arrests for common assault and one arrest for liquor-related matters.
There was also one arrest for the theft of a vehicle and one arrest for the possession of a stolen vehicle.
