Cell C robbers remanded in custody

ALEXANDRA – Heat on for attempted police murderers in Cell C robbery.

Five men charged with robbery and attempted murder of police officers will reappear on 9 October in the Alexandra Magistrates’ Court.

They were remanded in custody.

The accused were arrested after a shoot-out with the officers responding to a robbery midmorning on 9 November last year at a Cell C outlet, at a shopping centre in Carlswald, Midrand. Two of their accomplices who remained in a getaway vehicle escaped.

The men are said to have walked into the shop where three workers were assisting a customer and pulled out guns. They told the victims not to react or they would be hurt or killed. They robbed them of money and forced them into the back of the shop. The customer is said to have escaped in the process and reported the incident to security guards who alerted the police who cordoned off the area. A shoot-out ensued and three of the accused were arrested. Their two accomplices escaped and hijacked a motorist’s vehicle at a nearby robot but crashed it nearby and were also arrested.
