UPDATE: The two young mothers of the four children who died in the #AlexFire appear in court

ALEX – MEC of Social Development urges the community to support the mourning family.

Two suspects charged with cases of negligence and culpable homicide briefly appeared in the Alexandra Regional Magistrates’ Court which was filled to capacity on Tuesday, 18 September.

This was after four children aged between three to six years old died in the fire tragedy on 10th Avenue on Sunday morning 16 September. According to Alexandra police, only a 14-year-old survived the inferno. Both suspects who are the mothers of the deceased were remanded in custody and will appear in the same court for the bail application on 28 September.

Speaking outside the court, the MEC of Social Development in Gauteng, Nandi Mayathula-Khoza, said her department will offer support to the family especially the 14-year-old who survived the tragedy and lost all her clothes including her uniform and school work.

“Before coming to court we visited the family and we are appealing to community members to support the family during this period. The department will support the family in preparation for the funeral and more support will be given to the 14-year-old survivor who lost her school uniform and books,” said Mayathula-Khoza.

According to the MEC, the memorial service of the four children will be held in one of the local schools on Wednesday, 19 September. More details to follow.
