Ex-convict gives sharp advice to Alex High School pupils

ALEXANDRA – Children of Alex High School were told to stay away from crime, drugs and bad friends.

The Department of Correctional Services in Leeuwkop Prison in partnership with a local non-profit organisation, Blessed is the Hand that Gives, have embarked on a crime-awareness campaign in Alexandra schools.

The organisation provides skills development to the youth and school uniforms to needy children and lunch every afternoon. It also works with ex-convicts to help them reintegrate with the communities after they have served their time in prison.

Speaking to Alexandra High School children, Officer Thulani Zulu of Leeuwkop Prison warned youngsters about the dangers and consequences of crime. “Prison life is not what I would like to see anyone of you experiencing.

“The biggest favour you could do for yourselves is to stay away from criminal activities, drugs, and bad friends. Jail is not only a painful place to live in but it also makes your life miserable in society.

I urge all of you to take my advice before you find yourselves in trouble.”

Philemon Matume who had spent more than 15 years in Leeuwkop Prison shared his life experience with the youngsters. “I did a lot of terrible things in the past which I regret today. I will tell you the truth, life in jail is hell and life after jail is misery. The best thing you can do is to rehabilitate your mind before you find yourselves in the situation I found myself in.”
