Minister of Telecommunications and Postal Services happy with the post office’s state of readiness to take over social grants payments

ALEXANDRA – South African Post Office is ready to take over social grants from Cash Paymaster Services (CPS).

The Minister of Telecommunications and Postal Services Siyabonga Cwele visited Alexandra Post Office on Monday, 3 September to check the entity’s state of readiness to take over payments of social grants from next month.

This was after the Constitutional Court gave the South African Social Security Agency (Sassa) until end of September to terminate its contract with Cash Paymaster Services (CPS).

After his walk-around inspection and interactions with grant recipients at the Alexandra Post Office, Cwele said, “I am quite happy with the progress made by the post office so far. They have retrained their staff to equip them with the necessary skills to handle this massive change that is coming in their daily duties.

“Our major challenge at the moment in the post office is old infrastructure which we are working on changing so that the staff will be able to do their work without interruptions and delays.”

A 63-year-old grant recipient, Martha Mngoma said, “I changed my card last year in July and have not experienced any problem with my new card. The only problem we have with the post office is long queues.”
