Chance pays off for Alex’s Sibongile Mahlangu as she dreams of being a coffee brewer of note

BRAAMFONTEIN – A coffee brewmaster is in the making in this section of the Johannesburg CBD.

If you happen to be in Braamfontein by any chance and feel the urge for coffee in this bitingly cold weather, then look no further than some craft coffee at Coffee Craft and Daily Buzz roastery in the well-known coffee section of the Jozi CBD.

Here you will find a woman who aspires to be a barista of note one day. She goes by the name of Sibongile Mahlangu, an Alex born and bred daughter of the soil who is a big dreamer and believes not even the sky is the limit when it comes to striving to get what she hopes for in life.

Mahlangu, a 27-year-old mother of 10-year-old Sithembile, who goes to Nobel Primary School in Modderfontein, says she stumbled on a career of being a barista by chance but has fallen head-over-heels and won’t want to exchange it for anything.

This Northview High School matriculant in Balfour Park, said she was lured into this exciting career trap by her aunt, who happens to go by the same name, Sibongile, but a Monama.”She told me there was a craft coffee shop opening in Braam and wanted people to train as baristas, and I took a chance, and here I am today, a year later I am still loving and living it. I look forward to opening my own one day, in Alex of course,” she said with a gentle smile of someone determined to go places one day.

Her aunt works for Standard Bank in the Marshalltown section of the Jozi CBD which happens to be home to the Daily Buzz coffee shop.

Her parting shot was as pertinent as Women’s Month is today. “As women, we need to learn to stand on our two feet and depend on men as they dribble us like they do in a soccer match. I would love to open my own coffee shop in Alex and empower women from own community as well.”
