15 years jail for Tuk Tuk robber

ALEX - Man sentenced to 15 years' imprisonment in for aggravated robbery.

 

An Alex man was sentenced to 15 years’ imprisonment in the Alex Magistrates’ Court for aggravated robbery of a Tuk Tuk driver.

Magistrate Renier Boshoff found Bongani Maphutha (29) guilty of the offence which occurred on 15th Avenue on 4 August. The victim was approached by the accused and four others who are at large when he was calling for assistance from his employers after his vehicle had broken down.

At gunpoint, they demanded to know what he wanted in the township. One of them grabbed his cell phone and the victim ran into a nearby salon for help but the workers and their clients fled as the gang followed him inside. They assaulted the victim and hit him on the head with the butt of the gun causing him serious head injuries.

Community members apprehended the accused afterwards and handed him to the police who found the cell phone at his home. It was returned to the victim. Maphutha claimed the gun was with his accomplices.
