Lucky escape for taxi driver

ALEXANDRA – Man escapes attempted murder charge by agreeing to compensate victim.

A taxi driver was sentenced to three years’ imprisonment which was wholly suspended for five years on condition he pays the medical bills of a victim.

Nkosinathi Mahlangu was found guilty in Alexandra Magistrates’ Court for stabbing a 17-year old minor seven times with a screwdriver and hitting him with a brick. This after he had accused him of breaking the back window of his Toyota Quantum at 7.30pm on 16 June on Richard Baloyi Avenue.

The victim was taken to the Charlotte Maxeke Hospital where he was treated for a week.

Mahlangu was initially charged with attempted murder which was changed to assault with intent to cause grievous bodily harm by Magistrate Renier Boshoff after he had admitted to the crime and agreed to compensate the victim by paying his R5 000 medical bill.
