Lengwati, said to be a drug addict, bludgeoned her to death using an old pressing iron at their 10th Avenue home mid-morning on 2 May. A witness and neighbour responded to screams for help from her but found the door locked. He heard the accused commanding her to repeat after him the words, ‘I am the way the truth and the light,’ after which she screamed followed by silence. The witness called the police who came but the accused refused to unlock for them. Instead, he opened the window and threw out the keys enabling them to get in. He was arrested and the granny was pronounced dead on the scene.

Opting to represent himself before Magistrate Renier Boshoff assisted by state prosecutor Lufuno Maphiri, Lengwati claimed to have killed her because of witchcraft.
