Joburg customer agent charged with fraud and corruption after stealing R500

JOBURG – A City of Johannesburg employee has been arrested and appeared before the court.

A City of Johannesburg customer care agent has been arrested and charged with fraud and corruption after allegedly stealing R500.

Executive Mayor Herman Mashaba said Kenoshi Makamu who works at the Diepsloot Youth Centre, appeared in the Randburg Magistrates’ Court on 21 June, a day after her arrest.

The City’s Group Forensic and Investigation Service investigated a complaint by a resident that the R500 she paid into her account never reflected on her statement.

Mashaba said it is alleged that Makamu processed the resident’s payment manually and gave her a receipt but allegedly pocketed the R500 instead of paying it into the account. “Upon realising the matter was under investigation, Ms Makamu paid the R500 into the complainant’s account on 4 May.”

To report fraud and corruption, residents can visit the Group Forensic and Investigation Service office at 48 Ameshoff Street in Braamfontein.
