Students of Central Johannesburg College (CJC) Doornfontein campus closed the busy Sivewrite Avenue with burning tyres and rocks forcing traffic to be diverted to other routes on 27 May.
The student’s movement called Tvets Must Rise demanded that both the principal of the college, Phillip Mojalefa, and Doornfontein campus manager Bopela vacate their offices. Students accused Bopela of pocketing their registration fees andNational Student Financial Aid Scheme (NSFAS) monies.

Tvets Must Rise spokesperson for the Doornfontein campus, Mokgethi Makhura accused Namename Bopela and his wife, who also works for the college, of fraud and corruption. “We want Bopela and his wife out of our college. We can’t continue paying our registration fees to Bopela and his wife. The college must provide us with a bank account which we can use to pay our registration fee into,” Makhura said
He said they had reported the matter to the college principal last year and again early this year. “Our principal is deaf, we’ve been engaging him over these matters since last year but our cries fell on deaf ears. They left us with no other option but to shut down this campus.”
The student movement’s leaders said they will close the campus until all their demands are met. Among other things they demanded were accommodation, a transport and meal allowance, and the equal treatment of campuses by management.
Attempts to get comment from management failed as phones went unanswered.
