NORWOOD – The students from Andre's Taekwondo Academy achieved 22 medals at the annual Arnold Classic Africa in Sandton.

There were flying kicks and missiles during the Arnold Classic Africa festival and Norwood’s own Andre’s Taekwondo Academy went home with 22 medals.

The Classic is one of the highlights on the Joburg sporting calendar and provides a platform for athletes in a variety of sports from bodybuilding to darts. Andre’s Taekwondo Academy took part in the martial arts section. The festival took place over three days from 18 to 20 May at the Sandton Convention Centre.

Founder and chief instructor at the academy, Andre van Tonder said that they were truly honoured to take part with participants’ ages ranging 10 to 50. “Of our 11 students who participated a total of 22 medals were achieved.”

The academy won six gold medals, 10 silver and six bronze medals. Van Tonder said he was extremely proud of his students who had been working hard for the event. “The results truly show that hard work pays off.”

The academy is also celebrating 10 students who will be receiving some high honours – four students will be receiving their national colours in taekwondo while six students will be receiving presidential colours at a ceremony in Pretoria on 16 June.
