Metro police call for safe driving

JOHANNESBURG – The heavy rains in Johannesburg caused a number of traffic incidents on 23 March.

The Metro police are calling on motorists to remain vigilant in the current heavy rains hitting Johannesburg, following three incidents that recently took place on 23 March.

The spokesperson for the Metro police, Chief Superintendent Wayne Minnaar said that the primary concern that occurred was the closing off of three lanes on the M1 near the Athol Oaklands off-ramp following a tree that collapsed on the highway due to the heavy rains.

Minnaar added that heavy floods are causing difficulties driving in Leeuwkop and Rivonia, while a motorist in Bryanston was left stuck on the side of the road due to flooding on the corner of Bryanston Drive and Brooke Avenue.

Minnaar said that traffic lights in the north and south of Johannesburg are out of order due to the rain. He said, “Motorists should be warned not to take any chances driving through moving water. Even 50cm of moving water can lead to your car sliding off the road. If motorists find themselves or anyone in trouble please call 10177.”

He also recommended to reduce driving speed, turn on headlights and keep a safe following distance.

“Additionally, if your eyesight is impaired and water is covering your windscreen, please don’t take a chance by driving. Pull over immediately and wait for the rain to subside.”
