Three-year-olds left on streets

ALEXANDRA – Toddler left on Alex street up for adoption.

Alex residents were asked to care for their children and not to let them roam the streets as they got lost and risked their safety.

The appeal was made by Elizabeth Mokoena of Kidz Clinic operating in partnership with the Victim Empowerment Unit at the Alex Police Station.

A mother, social activist and long-standing resident of Alex, Mokoena made the appeal saying there was a worrying trend in the township of children as young as three years old being let to roam the busy streets. “They are picked up by concerned residents including by other children who bring them to the station,” she said adding that in one instance, a child below five years old was brought to the police. “Her parents never came despite public notices for a lost child. She was passed with her unknown identity to a place of safety awaiting adoption and the mother may still be around.”

Mokoena appealed for the revival of family values which will encourage neighbours to look out for each other including caring for children and homes when one of them is away.
