This after she had withdrawn money from a bank partly to pay fees for a relative’s varsity studies.

Alex Police Station spokesperson Captain Allie Kodisang said they are investigating a case of general theft which occurred mid-morning on 17 February. The victim, carrying a baby, withdrew R11 000 from a bank at Pan Africa Mall intending to buy a television and to pay the varsity fees of R7 000.

Kodisang said that as she walked out of the bank, a man joined her and started talking to her. Immediately after, another man passed them and dropped a piece of plastic in front of them. Her ‘companion’ picked it up and immediately after three men got out of a vehicle which was parked next to them.

She said they flashed what she thought were police identity cards and accused the pair of stealing money. They forced them into the vehicle, took the woman’s bag and searched it. In fear, the woman told them that she had just withdrawn money.

The suspects returned the bag to her and ordered her out of the vehicle as her baby was crying. The suspects then drove away at high speed with her ‘companion’.
