Teaching and learning at Carter Primary School resumed this morning (14 February) following a power cut on 9 February due to an unpaid power bill.
Sources told Alex News that activities resumed after a down payment of R33 0000 and a payment arrangement was made on the accumulated bill of about R140 000.
Operations were halted for almost a week when the power was cut, shutting down computers for administration and communication, laptops and smart boards for learning, illuminating dark classrooms and cooking for the school’s feeding scheme.
Several attempts to contact the principal were in vain.
Teachers demonstrated briefly on 13 February until a meeting was held with district officials in the presence of the principal. The problem occurred at a time when the Joburg East District of the Department of Education was already investigating allegations of maladministration at the school. District director Mnyamezeli Ndevu said the investigation will also include meetings with school governing body members and other stakeholders.
