Fears of an environmental health hazard in Alex may be averted following Pikitup’s decision to work over the weekend collecting rubbish after a protest by former Jozi@Work workers.
Confirming the weekend work, MMC for Environment and Infrastructure Services, Nico de Jager said, “Collection teams will be assisted by the Joburg Metro Police Department and South African Police Services.”

The protest was staged after Jozi@Work staff members’ contracts were not renewed in December. Some protesters were charged with the assault and intimidation of Pikitup staff at the Marlboro depot.
They appeared in the Alexandra Magistrates’ Court where some were released and others remanded in custody pending a further hearing on 13 February.
De Jager added, “The agency successfully applied for an interdict against the protesters to protect its infrastructure and staff members. We will not be held ransom by the lies and hooliganism of a few at the expense of thousands.”
He added that those found guilty of the charges, will not be eligible to apply for similar positions of a rotational nature within the City.

The collections will include Riverpark, East Bank, Kwa Bhekilanga Extension 8, Tsutsumani Extension 7 and 10, Marlboro, Malboro Extension 7, Bramley, Kelvin, Wynberg, Woodmead, Kyberock, Sunninghill, Morningside Extension 40, Gallo Manor, Buccleuch, Wendywood, Illovo, Athol and Sandown.
Christa Venter of Pikitup appealed to affected residents to be patient as collections will also be prioritised next week.
