On 8 December the former gardener allegedly asked the female domestic worker for the gate’s remote, claiming that he wanted to buy cigarettes at a shop. He returned later and handed back the remote. When he asked for the remote again in the evening to go out, the domestic worker asked her employer who agreed.

At about 5am the next morning, he knocked on the domestic worker’s door and asked to be let into her room claiming to be alone. As she opened her door she heard a noise coming from the main house and the man told her that their boss was dead.

Both went to the house and found their employer on the floor bleeding from the stomach. She asked for the remote but the man didn’t have it. Neighbours, police and paramedics were called to the scene. CCTV footage was viewed and the gardener was seen with four others tying the victim up with cable ties.

His accomplices stole jewellery, luggage, cellphones and laptops valued at R100 000. Some of the stolen items were recovered from the accomplices’ homes.
