Suspects nabbed by police for robberies

JOBURG – Police are still searching for three other suspects in connection with recent robberies.

Johannesburg Central police have arrested a 36-year-old suspect for common robbery on 4 February. His two accomplices are still at large.

The three suspects allegedly robbed a 19-year-old teenager on the corner of Mooi and Jeppe streets, according to the acting spokesperson for the Johannesburg Central Police Station, Constable Constance Lelimo.

Lelimo said the three suspects approached the victim, manhandled him and took his cellphone and about R250. “The security came to the rescue and the police arrived and arrested the one suspect while his two accomplices fled with the complainant’s belongings.”

A police investigation is underway and the suspect is expected to appear in the Johannesburg Magistrate’s Court soon.

In a separate incident, the Johannesburg Central police also arrested two suspects after committing armed robbery on the corner of Carr and Henry Nxumalo streets in Newtown on 11 February.

The suspects allegedly robbed a 27-year-old man next to Bekezela College Squatter Camp, said Lelimo.

“The victim was approached by the three suspects who pointed a firearm at him and took his cellphones and a wallet containing his driver’s licence and about R1 200.

“The victim remained at the crime scene and when two of the three suspects came back, he pointed them out to the community.”

She said the two suspects were apprehended and assaulted by the community before the police came to their rescue.

An ambulance took the suspects to the nearby hospital and the police are still searching for the third suspect.

“A firearm and a broken knife were recovered at the scene. We are appealing to the community to refrain from taking the law into their own hands.”

The police investigation is underway and the suspects are expected to appear in the Johannesburg Magistrate’s Court soon.
