Some of Alex’s successful 2017 matric pupils urged counterparts who failed not to despair.
“It’s not the end of the world, they have a second chance to make it,” said Sampi Hlapolosa when he collected his matric certificate. Hlapolosa achieved three distinctions – in business studies, history and Sesotho – and also passed geography, English, life orientation and mathematics literacy. He has registered for law and commerce degrees at Wits and at the University of Johannesburg.

The Gauteng Department of Education’s Second Chance Matric Support programme conducted after school and over weekends has benefited many pupils, said Hector Ngxanga, deputy principal of East Bank Secondary School.
The programme prepares them for supplementary examinations scheduled for March, progressed learners’ examinations in June, amended senior certificate exams in June and part-time candidates’ examinations in November. It focuses on accounting, agricultural science, business studies, economics, English, geography, history, mathematics, mathematics literacy, life sciences and physical science.
Tutorials are conducted in class as well as digital online and offline programmes, television and radio broadcasts, multimedia platforms and Mzansi libraries online.
Expected outcomes are;
- Learners obtaining a matric certificate
- Increased learner retention
- Increased computer skills, job opportunities and career pathing
- Learners’ access to bursaries for further studies.
