Ex-councillor needs help to feed children and the elderly

ALEXANDRA – Ex-councillor Meisie Modiba provides bread to young children and the elderly on Wednesdays and Sundays.

Ex-councillor for Ward 105, Meisie Modiba seeks assistance from Good Samaritans who are willing to donate bread for 150 elderly and children of the community.

Modiba started Tsutsumani Organisation, a non-profit organisation, in 2015 to help provide bread to needy families in the community on Wednesdays and Sundays.

“The idea came to mind when I was still a councillor. Seeing a lot of people who could not afford to buy bread just broke my heart. I then decided to do something about it,” Modiba said.

She then sought advice from local philanthropist, Linda Twala, who was happy to offer his wisdom.

With the advice from Twala, Modiba knocked on many doors for help, but none were opened.

“Finally, we got a bakery in Lombardy that donates bread to charity organisations. That is where most of our supplies come from.”

Some days are better than others and on days when there is no bread from the bakery, Modiba digs into her pocket to make sure that the people have bread.

“On good days, I also cook for them so that they can eat before going home.”

Pensioner Dudu Chauke (72) said she was grateful to Modiba for her efforts to feed the needy.

Chauke said, “We [now] save money for other expenses because bread is expensive. [So] this is really needed in the community.”

She encouraged people to lend a helping hand to people their communities.

“If you do have the means to help, please do so because there are a lot of people who are in need. Every little bit counts.”

Sheila Moloi (63) said she started getting bread from the organisation since day one. Moloi said, “There are a lot of people in our community that need help, and people like Meisie are needed in our communities.

“I pray that doors open up for her so that she can continue helping many more people.”
