Help curb crime in Alex

ALEXANDRA – Police call for residents' input on anti-crime participation.

Alex police have appealed for increased residents’ participation in the fight against crime said to inhibit others from venturing out in public, particularly at night.

The township’s dense population crowded into a two to three square mile area, includes the bad who inflict terror on others through violent contact crime which is a major concern to the police and peace-loving residents. Weekly incidents of reported murder, rape, robberies at the hands of gun and knife-toting thugs keep the police busy, especially on weekends.

Police spokesperson Captain Allie Kodisang appealed for public involvement against the criminals said to confine the elderly in their homes. “It’s the worst crime to maim and force them, frail and defenceless as they are, to live in fear of young people and grandchildren who should be protecting them.”

He said the residents live with the criminals, know them and sometimes protect them from arrest. “Police will only succeed when criminals are reported regardless of relationship before they also turn on those protecting them.”

Police, he added, are part of the community they want to see safe. “Their success will only be with the public’s cooperation and not criticism Those with concerns and complaints against police action should report for corrective measures to be taken and better relations to be developed.”h

Kodisang also expressed concern about rape and sexual offences which are committed by known suspects on victims who depended and trusted them. “Such offences should be reported before it turns into serial rape.” He also expressed concern about the continued construction of shacks hidden behind formal dwellings. “Counsellors should alert police on this development to assist in planning their patrols.”

He urged residents to refrain from vigilante action through stoning of victims and burning of tyres as was reported recently in this paper. “Residents can make citizens’ arrests but should hand over suspects to the police who will forward them to the courts to adjudicate and prosecute them.”

He urged residents to participate in the police forum.
