Philanthropist Linda Twala appealed to the government and parents to institute protective measures against a devastating drug called flakka said to be from South America which has reportedly arrived in Durban.

A video that has gone viral shows users behaving strangely. In one case, a user bangs his head on a metal garage door, seemingly without pain. In another instance, one is seen falling from a high-rise building, seemingly with the urge to fly, and who later died. In yet another, someone gets out of a moving vehicle, speaking in a strange language; others undress and roll around uncontrollably, all with a zombie-like facial expression, earning it its other title of the zombie drug.

Twala worries that Alex children, already under strain from nyaope and other drugs, will be devastated if flakka lands in the township. “The drug dealers will take advantage of the euphoria of the festive period and mood to target unsuspecting and vulnerable kids with the drug and others, leaving them hooked and leading to death and disability from injuries. ”

He said girls, especially, will be at risk of taking all sorts of drugs and being led into prostitution by drug dens and brothels. “I advise parents to send boys and not girls to the shops, to discourage kids from accepting presents from strangers, and attend matric and other children’s events where drinks could be spiked.”

He urged parents to report known drug runners to the police, and said should be arrested and used to identify drug lords known to be profiting heavily from children while they are safe and in the comfort of their affluent suburban homes.
